The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is a London Symphony Orchestra sometimes called "Britain's National Orchestra."
Founded in 1946 by the conductor Thomas Beecham, the first concert was held in Croydon September 15, 1946.
Beecham becomes principal conductor until his death in 1961. He was replaced by his assistant Rudolf Kempe which will then appointed head for life in 1970. Big names like Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy has provided musical direction for the orchestra before Daniele Gatti resumes the position since 1996.
The orchestra has made a tour through the United States in 1950, becoming the second British orchestra on tour in the US since the London Symphony Orchestra in 1912.
Besides film music, the orchestra recorded the orchestral arrangements of the group Pink Floyd, Queen, The Police, ABBA and Deep Purple.
