Ciccio loves Petronius Arbiter\'s novel Satyricon, while his friend Franco understands nothing of this great work. Ciccio has also seen Federico Fellini\'s film of the same name, while Franco doesn\'t even know it exists. This duo of misfortune ends up in an inn near Rome for a day\'s work. There the inn manager, seeing the success of Fellini\'s film, decorates it in the style of Ancient Rome. Even the guests and waiters dress in ancient costumes, and so do Ciccio and Franco. But they make a blunder, they break a jug of ancient wine and are taken on the hunt. The night finds them in the countryside, they fall asleep and wake up in Rome in the time of Emperor Nero.

Ο Ciccio λατρεύει τη νουβέλα Satyricon του Petronius Arbiter, ενώ ο φίλος του, ο Franco, δεν καταλαβαίνει τίποτα από το σπουδαίο αυτό έργο. Επίσης ο Ciccio έχει δει την ομώνυμη ταινία του Federico Fellini, ενώ ο Franco δεν γνωρίζει καν την ύπαρξή της. Το εν λόγω δίδυμο της συμφοράς καταλήγει σε ένα πανδοχείο, κοντά στη Ρώμη, για μεροκάματο. Εκεί ο διευθυντής του πανδοχείου, βλέποντας την επιτυχία της ταινίας του Fellini, το διακοσμεί στο στυλ της Αρχαίας Ρώμης. Ακόμα και οι καλεσμένοι και οι σερβιτόροι ντύνονται με τις αρχαίες φορεσιές, το ίδιο κάνουν και ο Ciccio με τον Franco. Όμως κάνουν μια γκάφα, σπάζουν μια κανάτα με αρχαίο κρασί και τους παίρνουν στο κυνήγι. Τους βρίσκει η νύχτα στην εξοχή, κοιμούνται και ξυπνούν στην Ρώμη της εποχής του Αυτοκράτορα Νέρωνα.
