Detective Murdoch investigates the death of a young man, Nathan Siebold, who died just after prayers at his synagogue. Dr. Ogden concludes that he died of as a result of a consistent and lengthy exposure to arsenic. Nathan worked for Isaac Begelman and there was obviously an attachment between him and Begelman\'s daughter Devra. She however had another suitor in the form of Dr. Simon Goldberg. As Murdoch delves into the case, he comes to believe that Devra was forcibly being kept away from Nathan against her will but she too is suffering from arsenic poisoning. When a friend of Nathan\'s is severely beaten, the case begins to make sense and sends Murdoch down a different line of inquiry.

Ο ντετέκτιβ Murdoch ερευνά τον θάνατο ενός νεαρού άνδρα, του Nathan Siebold, ο οποίος πέθανε αμέσως μετά την προσευχή στη συναγωγή του. Η Dr. Ogden καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι πέθανε από συνεχή και μακροχρόνια έκθεση σε αρσενικό. Ο Nathan εργαζόταν για τον Isaac Begelman και υπήρχε προφανώς δεσμός μεταξύ αυτού και της κόρης του Begelman, Devra. Εκείνη όμως είχε άλλον μνηστήρα στο πρόσωπο του Dr. Simon Goldberg. Καθώς ο Murdoch εμβαθύνει στην υπόθεση, καταλήγει να πιστεύει ότι η Devra κρατούνταν με τη βία μακριά από τον Nathan παρά τη θέλησή της, αλλά και αυτή πάσχει από δηλητηρίαση με αρσενικό. Όταν ένας φίλος του Nathan ξυλοκοπείται σοβαρά, η υπόθεση αρχίζει να αποκτά νόημα και στέλνει τον Murdoch σε μια διαφορετική κατεύθυνση έρευνας.
