Οι Αρχαιοι Έλληνες πίστευαν ότι ο Δίας ήταν αρχηγός θεών και ανθρώπων, ανώτερος και ισχυρότερος από όλους. Οι άλλοι θεοί ήταν κατώτεροι από αυτόν και στη φυσική δύναμη και στο αξίωμα. Κανείς δεν είχε δικαίωμα να του αντιταχθεί. Εξουσίαζε και όλα τα

φυσικά φαινόμενα. Η βροντή, η αστραπή και ο κεραυνός ήταν τα όπλα του. Πίστευαν ότι αυτός ρύθμιζε τις τύχες των ανθρώπων και τον συνέδεαν με όλες τις εκδηλώσεις της ανθρώπινης ζωής.
